Plugging the Upper Lines

If you’re not sure if the pool itself is leaking or the pool plumbing is, you can plug the upper plumbing lines to test for leaking.

1. Turn off the pool filter; make sure it will not turn itself on again automatically.

2. Find the plugs used to winterize your pool. These will include plugs for the returns (jets where the water comes back into the pool) and gizmos’ to plug the skimmers. If you have return jets in the steps too, there may or may not be plugs for these.

3. The gizmo can be screwed directly into the inlet in the bottom of the skimmer, Teflon tape should be used on the threads.

4. Next, screw the nozzles off each return jet and plug. The white plugs with thread on them can be directly crewed in. The black rubber plugs should be pushed in and then the thumb screw tightened.

5. Mark the water level with a piece of tape and watch for 24 hours. Make note of any water loss.

A ” Bucket Test” can also be done at this time to insure any water loss is not due to evaporation.
